Why Governance Is the Missing Foundation

Most AI projects fail for organizational reasons, not technical ones. Teams rush to build models before deciding who owns them, how they’ll be monitored, or what rules they must follow. Governance defines the guardrails that make AI safe to scale.

When governance is missing:

A Practical AI Governance Model

AI governance should be simple enough to use daily. It has four layers:

1. Ownership

Assign three clear roles:

  • Sponsor: executive responsible for business impact.

  • Steward: ensures data quality and compliance.

  • Reviewer: validates fairness, accuracy, and ethics.

Each role reports performance and risk through normal management channels, not side committees.

2. Decision Framework

Define who approves pilots, who validates models before launch, and who monitors ongoing performance. Write these rules down once, use them everywhere.

3. Data Standards

List approved data sources, classification levels, and access rules. Make documentation mandatory for every model so anyone can see how decisions are made.

4. Oversight and Reporting

Create a simple dashboard that tracks:

  • number of models in use,

  • their accuracy and bias levels,

  • key compliance indicators.

This lets executives and boards see progress and risk at a glance.
